October 27th, is one of the blackest days of Kashmir history. It is on this day, some 64 years before, when Indian occupational forces entered the state of J&K against the wishes of the people and since then have not vacated the same despite the passing of more than a dozen resolutions by the United Nations Security Council and the assurances given to the world community including the people of Kashmir by India that Indian forces will leave Kashmir as soon as peace is restored. The Indian leadership had also both inside and outside the Indian parliament made statements promising the people of Kashmir that they are committed to give them a chance to exercise their right of self determination and if the decision goes against India it will gladly accept the same as it doesn’t want any kind of forced marriage. It is, however, unfortunate that despite the U. N. Resolutions and the promises made, India has not fulfilled its obligation so far. On the other hand, it has used all means of subjugating the people of Kashmir and in that have enacted as well as extended draconian laws to the state, which has caused terrible miseries and sufferings to the people of Kashmir. The statement made by Omar Abdullah on Friday, that J&K Armed Forced Special Powers Act would be scrapped from some areas of J&K is, therefore, of little importance for the people of J&K, who have been brutalized and terrorized under the said law for the last twenty years with impunity. India having occupied the state of J&K forcibly, therefore, at a time when India is aspiring to become a permanent member of U.N. Security Council, it should, fulfill, its commitments by allowing the people a chance to determine their future in accordance with U.N. Resolutions, to usher an era of peace, progress and prosperity in the sub-continent, where two nuclear powers are at draggers drawn over the issue of Kashmir and the possibility of a nuclear war between them cannot be ruled out.
The Bar Association while stressing for the resolution of Kashmir dispute in accordance with U. N. Resolutions, therefore, appeals the people to show their resolve to observe complete shutdown on 27.10.2011.
