Bar calls for election Boycott

press release

The Executive Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has decided to request people of districts Kupwara and Kulgam and other places where the elections are going to be held on 02.12.2014 to stay away from the elections as these elections are being conducted under the shadow of guns and are in no way substitute for the right of self-determination guaranteed to the people of the State by 18 number of Security Council Resolutions and the promises made by the Indian leaders both inside and outside the parliament right from 1947 onwards.

The Bar Association reiterates its demand of holding a plebiscite in the state of J&K according to the security council resolutions so that the people can chose about their future and peace prevails in the sub-continent and the people live a peaceful life without any danger of a hallow cast hovering over their heads. The Bar Association also reiterates that participation in the election would be a betrayal with the blood of the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the noble cause of freedom. The Bar Association also makes it clear that farce and fabricated elections have been held in the state right from 1947 onwards but they have yielded nothing as the people despite of holding those elections still persists with the demand of holding a plebiscite in the state of J&K and to create a favourable and conducive atmosphere for such impartial and independent expression of their views. The Bar Association feels that the holding of elections in the state where most of its parts are still continuing to be declared as Disturbed Areas and where free licdnce has been given to the armed forces to kill people even on mere suspicion and where draconian laws such as J&K Forces Special Powers Act, Public Safety Act, Enemy Agents Ordinance Act, Disturbed Areas Act etc. are still in force, holding of elections is an eye wash and is aimed at to hoodwink the international community to make them to believe that everything is alright in the state which however, is not true or correct.

In the meanwhile Bar Association has also decided to hold a daylong conference on the position of human rights in the state of J&K on 10.12.2014 in makeshift lower court complex at Sannat Ghar Srinagar for which invitations will be given to all the intellectuals, academicians, doctors and lawyers etc. all over the state. The conference will begin at 11:00 a.m. with an interval of 45 minutes from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
